China and EU Hold an International IP Seminar in BeijingIn order to further enhance the exchange and collaboration in the area of Intellectual Property between the EU (European Union) and China, China’s State Administration of Intellectual Property (IP) and European Patent Office jointly held an International Intellectual Property Seminar in Beijing on Oct. 23, 2003 concerning the theme of IP Cooperation between China and European Union.

Wang Jin Chuan, director of the State Administration of Intellectual Property, spoke at the opening ceremony of the seminar. He said the European Union and China Intellectual Property cooperation project is a typical example of Sino-foreign cooperation. This cooperation plays an important role in pushing forward the building of China’s Intellectual Property infrastructure.

The director of European Patent Office said that this project is aimed to acquire economical gains for both Chinese citizens and European citizens through a collaborative partnership. The director also said he hopes the project will instigate dialogue among various Chinese and European organizations.

More than 200 representatives will review the execution status of IP cooperation project during the two-day seminar. The theme of this seminar included the significance of IP protection after China entrance into the WTO, the new era’s patent system, copyright protection, brand and trademark protection, and jurisdiction. The European Union and China IP cooperation project is designed to spark IP protection arousal among the general public. The project was launched in 1998 with capital investment of 45 million euro and planned to end in 2004.
